FuRRR Feline Rescue – Cat Adoption Process

Are you looking to adopt a FuRRR family member? FuRRR Feline Rescue carefully screens all applicants to ensure our cats and kittens are placed in the best possible homes—for the well-being of both the family and the animal. We aim to make the process flexible, friendly, and thorough so that every match leads to a long, happy life together.

Before You Apply

Please read the following carefully. The application process:

  • Does NOT guarantee approval

  • Can take up to 3 business days (we try to respond sooner)

  • Requires all fields to be completed or it will NOT be processed

  • Requires applicants to be at least 21 years of age

📩 Important: After submitting your application, check your Junk/Spam folder if you haven’t received a response by the next day. Emails come from adoption@furrr.org.

Special Note About Kittens (1 Year or Younger)

Kittens younger than a year old must go home with another playful kitty, unless there is already a playful kitty in the home. Many arrive as bonded siblings or buddies, and we do not separate them. We ask that you read the article about why kitten pairing is essential for their development and well-being.

Step 1 — Veterinary Requirements

If you currently have pets or have had pets in the last 5–6 years:

  • Please call your veterinarian BEFORE applying and give permission for a FuRRR representative to speak with them.

If permission is not granted, your application will NOT be processed.

All current or previous pets must:

  • Be spayed/neutered

  • Have a history of veterinary care and vaccinations

Step 2 — Virtual Home Visit (Required)

After submitting your application:

  • You must email photos of the interior of your home showing that it is clean, safe, and appropriate for cats/kittens.

Renters:

  • Your landlord will be contacted to confirm pets are allowed.

Live with Parents:

Step 3 — Application Review & Approval for Meet & Greet

Once all steps above are completed and approved:

  • A meet and greet will be scheduled.

Please notify us as soon as possible if you cannot attend. Volunteers often make a special trip to the rescue for your appointment.

Important Notes:

  • We do NOT place cats on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Final adoption approval is determined after the meet and greet.

Step 4 — After the Meet & Greet

All cats and kittens must:

  • Receive a final veterinary exam

  • Obtain a health certificate for adoption

This may take a few days depending on the timing of your visit.

🗓 Vet appointments are every Thursday afternoon, and slots fill quickly. A meet and greet does not guarantee immediate availability of a vet appointment.

Step 5 — Adoption Day! Checklist ✅

When

  • Adoptions will be scheduled after cats return from their vet appointment and we receive their Health Certificate from the vet office. Days & times will be based on volunteer availability.

Where

  • All adoptions take place at the rescue in Gonic, NH, not at retail stores (per NH State law).

What to Bring

✅ A Safe, Secure Pet Carrier (Required)

  • You must bring a carrier to take your cat home.

  • Hard-sided carriers are preferred.

  • Standard 24″ size is recommended for an adult cat or two small kittens.

  • Without a proper carrier, you will not be permitted to bring your cat home.

✅ Non-Expired Driver’s License or State-Issued ID

  • Required to verify residence.

  • Must be presented at the meet and greet or upon pickup.
